The City of Memphis, Tennessee owns and operates the T.E. Maxson Wastewater Treatment Facility (Maxson WWTF) located in the southwest portion of Memphis. The WWTF currently treats an average of 70 million gallons per day (mgd) of wastewater, serving the City since its commissioning in 1975. With upgrades over the years, the current liquid treatment process consists of coarse bar screens, grit removal, fine bar screens, primary clarification, high-rate bio towers, activated sludge, and secondary clarification prior to discharge into the Mississippi River. The City is currently planning an upgrade to provide disinfection as the final treatment process to meet requirements in the draft National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. In addition, the City has identified the potential need to make process upgrades to biological and clarification processes to facilitate effective long-term operation of a disinfection system, address plant odor concerns, and provide additional treatment capacity.
